AfDB Grants Zimbabwe US$4 Million for Debt Clearance

The African Development Bank approved a US$4 million grant to Zimbabwe to help clear arrears and strengthen debt management, Daily News reported. The injection provides Harare with a fiscal breather as it navigates a complex debt restructuring dialogue with international creditors. However, the grant also underscores Zimbabwe’s precarious financial position and its reliance on multilateral lifelines to maintain even basic sovereign credibility. The country has been in arrears with the AfDB and other lenders for decades, limiting its access to new financing. The funds will be used to clear a portion of the arrears, but the overall debt burden remains unsustainable without broader economic reforms and a comprehensive debt resolution strategy. The move is seen as a confidence-building step in ongoing talks with creditors under the Structured Dialogue Platform.
