Cabinet Approves 10-Year Sugarcane Industry Development Plan to Boost Ethanol

The Zimbabwean Cabinet has formally approved the Sugarcane Industry Development Plan (2026-2035), a strategic roadmap aimed at enhancing competitiveness and increasing ethanol production. Presented by the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, the plan focuses on climate-resilient innovation and value-added processing to transform the sector. This long-term commitment seeks to insulate the industry from global market fluctuations while bolstering domestic energy security. However, the success of this initiative depends on the government's ability to attract consistent private investment and maintain stable land-use policies. The core vulnerability is the potential for bureaucratic inertia and funding gaps to derail the plan, leaving the industry exposed to the same inefficiencies that have historically hampered agricultural output.
