Constitutional Court Defers Biti, Madhuku Application to Block Amendments
The Constitutional Court has deferred an application by prominent opposition figures Tendai Biti and Lovemore Madhuku, seeking to block proposed constitutional amendments, until April 1. This deferral extends the legal process concerning the proposed legislative changes, which could prolong political uncertainty, according to analysts. Madhuku, representing the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA), asserts his organization strongly opposes the proposed amendments and has filed a separate challenge, which he describes as a multi-pronged legal attack. Supporters argue the amendments represent a "power grab," while the government maintains they are necessary reforms. The deferral, while not a ruling, delays a definitive legal blockade, giving the government more time to push its agenda. Prolonged political uncertainty and legal battles over fundamental laws can deter investment, slowing economic development and affecting business confidence.
