Cuprum Copper Zimbabwe Seeks Exhumation of 35 Graves for Mining
Mining firm Cuprum Copper Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd formally applied for government permission to exhume and rebury 35 human remains in Gokwe North. According to a public notice reported by the Daily News, the company intends to clear the land to make way for expanded copper mining operations. This application follows a series of disputes across Zimbabwe where mining concessions overlap with communal lands and ancestral burial sites. Historically, foreign and local mining firms have faced intense community resistance and spiritual backlash when attempting to relocate graves for commercial gain. The core vulnerability for the mining firm is the potential for local community protests and legal challenges to stall the lucrative extraction project indefinitely.
