Government Commissions Solar Minigrid to Boost Rural Energy Access
Energy Minister July Moyo commissioned a 120kW solar minigrid in Hurungwe on May 21, a project supported by the UNDP. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to provide sustainable power to off-grid rural communities that have historically lacked reliable electricity. The project aims to stimulate local economic activity by enabling small-scale industrial and agricultural processing. While the commissioning marks a milestone, the long-term success of the minigrid depends on consistent maintenance and community-led management models. The limited scale of such projects remains the core vulnerability. These initiatives struggle to meet the massive, unmet energy demand across the country's rural landscape.
