Government To Review Lithium Export Quotas For Mining Producers
The Zimbabwean government plans to review export quotas for six major lithium producers next year, contingent on the establishment of local beneficiation plants. Mines Minister Polite Kambamura stated that the current quotas were granted as a temporary measure to encourage investment. Supporters argue that forcing local processing will capture more value from the country’s mineral wealth, while mining companies counter that the infrastructure requirements for such plants are prohibitively expensive. This policy shift represents a strategic attempt to move away from raw mineral exports toward a value-added industrial model. Bottom line: The state is tightening control over lithium exports to force industrialization within the mining sector.
