High Court Greenlights Trial in Zimasco Chrome Theft Case
The High Court has cleared the path for the trial of a suspect accused of stealing US$269,000 worth of chrome ore from Zimasco. The company alleges that the accused unlawfully extracted over 27,000 tonnes of raw chrome fines from its Rhodesdale 3 mining claim between May and June 2021. This legal development marks a significant step in Zimasco's efforts to recover assets and hold perpetrators accountable for resource theft. The case underscores the persistent issue of illegal mining and asset misappropriation within the country's lucrative mining sector. The immediate systemic hurdle is the slow pace of judicial proceedings, which often allows for the dissipation of evidence and complicates the recovery of stolen mineral wealth. This trial represents a crucial test for the legal system in addressing resource theft and protecting the interests of major mining companies in Zimbabwe.
