IMF Passes Zimbabwe’s First Review, Warns of Risks

The IMF completed the first review of Zimbabwe’s 10-month Staff-Monitored Programme, projecting continued single-digit inflation and a resilient economy, NewZimbabwe.com reported. The approval marks a significant step in Harare’s quest to normalize relations with international financial institutions after decades of arrears, but the Fund cautioned that significant risks persist. While praising tight monetary conditions and relative exchange rate stability, the IMF warned that external shocks, policy slippage, or a relaxation of fiscal discipline could quickly reverse gains, ZimGazette reported. The government must sustain reform momentum to unlock future financial support and debt restructuring. Zimbabwe’s fragile recovery remains hostage to its own policy consistency and global commodity prices, with no room for error, no external backstop, and a history of reversals.
