Kenya's Sugar Ban Chokes Zimbabwe Producers, Volumes Plunge 59%

Kenya's ban on sugar imports has severely choked Zimbabwean producers, with export volumes tumbling 59% in the first quarter ended June 30, 2026. Hippo Valley Estates chair Canaan Dube reported that only 15,711 tons were exported, forcing producers to seek alternative regional markets. The ban, imposed by Kenya to protect its domestic industry, has exposed Zimbabwe's overreliance on a single export destination. Local producers now face the strategic vulnerability of limited market diversification and must urgently negotiate new trade corridors or risk further revenue losses.
