Lithium Exports Hit $746 Million, Deepening Commodity Reliance

Zimbabwe’s lithium exports generated US$746 million in the first half of 2026, with spodumene concentrates contributing US$672.8 million, the Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe reported. The figures underscore the rapid growth of the sector amid surging global demand for battery minerals, positioning lithium as a top export earner. However, the boom highlights the country’s deepening dependence on raw lithium shipments, as local processing capacity remains limited. Analysts warn that without beneficiation, Zimbabwe captures only a fraction of the value chain, leaving revenues exposed to price volatility and competition from processed mineral exporters like China. The core vulnerability is the failure to move beyond extraction, locking the country into a colonial-era commodity export model that enriches foreign processors.
