Lithium Producers Seek Export Ban Extension
Zimbabwe's lithium producers have appealed to the government to extend the January 2027 deadline for a ban on lithium concentrate exports, citing incomplete processing plants. Speaking at the Chamber of Mines Annual Conference, the Lithium Association of Zimbabwe chairman noted that most companies are still finalizing beneficiation facilities. The plea underscores the fragile economics of the industry, which is central to Zimbabwe's export earnings and foreign currency generation. The government's beneficiation policy requires local processing, but delays in plant completion challenge the timeline. The LAZ chairman said companies have invested heavily but need more time, warning that a sudden halt in exports would hurt revenues. The government faces pressure to balance its beneficiation goals with the industry's viability.
