Mutapa Energy Confirms 40M Tonnes Lithium at Sandawana

Mutapa Energy Resources CEO Innocent Rukweza announced a JORC-compliant assessment confirming 39.9 million tonnes of lithium resources on Block A at Sandawana Mine, NewZimbabwe.com reported. The find positions Zimbabwe as a potentially dominant player in the global battery minerals race, attracting interest from electric vehicle manufacturers and commodity traders. However, opaque state control via the Mutapa Investment Fund raises fears of resource nationalism that could deter the foreign investment needed to develop the deposit. Without transparent auction processes and clear regulatory frameworks, the lithium windfall risks being siphoned by political elites rather than funding national development. The government must now balance sovereign control with investor confidence to avoid the resource curse, or the 40-million-tonne discovery could become a missed opportunity that leaves the economic transformation agenda unfulfilled.
