Nurses Demand Urgent Security Upgrades at Ngomahuru Psychiatric Hospital

The Zimbabwe Nurses Association has demanded immediate government intervention to address deteriorating infrastructure and security at Ngomahuru Psychiatric Hospital. NewZimbabwe reported that the union's outcry follows the tragic death of a mentally ill patient who escaped the facility and drowned in the Tugwi River.\n\nNurses argue that severe understaffing and broken perimeter fencing have turned the psychiatric facility into an unsafe environment for both patients and staff. Ministry of Health officials have acknowledged the security lapses but cite chronic budget deficits as the primary obstacle to immediate renovations.\n\nThe critical vulnerability remains the state's systemic underfunding of mental health institutions, which leaves vulnerable patients exposed to fatal operational failures. Consequently, until the government prioritizes healthcare funding, psychiatric facilities will continue to struggle with preventable tragedies and staff insecurity.
