RIDA Boss Arrested in Kariba Ferry Disaster
Kariba RIDA District Coordinator Ignatius Chiome has been arrested and charged with culpable homicide following the Lake Kariba ferry disaster that killed 97 people. Chiome appeared before the Kariba Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday and was remanded in custody. The Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) official is the first senior figure to face charges over the August 26 tragedy. Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest, which follows mounting public outrage. An iHarare and NewZimbabwe report indicates the case highlights chronic negligence in public transport safety. It raises questions about oversight of ferry operations on Lake Kariba.
