Trade Union Suspends Secretary General Amid Escalating Leadership Battle

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions suspended its Secretary General, Tirivanhu Marimo, following a chaotic National Executive Committee meeting. Union sources told NewZimbabwe that the executive committee moved to suspend Marimo over allegations of insubordination and financial misconduct. Marimo's allies rejected the suspension, claiming the move is a politically motivated purge orchestrated by rival factions within the labor body. This internal rift threatens to paralyze Zimbabwe's largest labor representative at a time of severe economic hardship for workers. The union's systemic vulnerability is its susceptibility to political co-optation, which dilutes its collective bargaining power.
