Zimbabwe Eases Customs Rules for Citizens Returning From South Africa

The Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion approved a flexible customs administration mechanism to ease repatriation. According to iHarare News, the temporary policy allows returning Zimbabwean citizens to import personal assets and selected goods duty-free. The policy shift responds to escalating pressure on Zimbabweans in South Africa facing permit expirations and shifting immigration rules. Prior customs regimes imposed prohibitive tariffs, which discouraged returnees from bringing their accumulated wealth back home. Ultimately, the government must balance this humanitarian facilitation against the risk of smuggling and lost tariff revenues at congested border posts.
