Zimbabwe Launches New Strategy to Address Migration Data Gaps

The government, in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), has launched a new strategy to fix critical gaps in migration data. IOM Chief of Mission Diana Cartier described the initiative as a major shift in the country’s approach to migration governance. The project aims to improve the accuracy and availability of data, which is essential for long-term policy planning. While this is a technical administrative improvement, it is a necessary step for better managing the country's diaspora and labor flows. The strategy represents a long-term institutional project rather than an immediate policy pivot, focusing on building the infrastructure required for evidence-based migration management. The Bottom Line: Improved data collection is a strategic prerequisite for the state to better leverage diaspora remittances and manage labor migration flows.
