Zimbabwe Maintains 2027 Lithium Export Ban Despite Industry Pleas

Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube has confirmed that Zimbabwe will strictly enforce the 2027 deadline for lithium producers to establish local beneficiation plants. The government has rejected extension pleas from miners, instead mandating that firms without processing capacity must enter into tolling agreements with local processors. This policy aims to capture more value from the country's mineral wealth, though it faces significant pushback from mining companies concerned about operational costs and infrastructure readiness. The state's rigid stance reflects a strategic pivot toward resource nationalism, forcing miners to either invest heavily in local infrastructure or cede control of their supply chains. The mandate remains a critical test of the government's ability to balance industrial development with investor confidence.
