Zimbabwe Nears Completion of Vital Harare-Beitbridge Highway Rehabilitation

The Ministry of Transport announced that the extensive rehabilitation of the critical 582-kilometer Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge highway has finally entered its final stretch. NewsDay Zimbabwe reported that local contractors successfully completed and opened 550.1 kilometers of the modernized road to active traffic. The multi-year infrastructure project aims to modernize Zimbabwe's primary transit corridor, which had deteriorated due to decades of neglect and underfunding. Previously, the government bypassed international tenders to award contracts to local consortia to accelerate construction. Engineers must now complete the remaining 31.9-kilometer bottleneck amid mounting pressure to facilitate regional trade with South Africa. Delays in finalizing this last segment risk choking commercial logistics and inflating transit costs for regional haulers.
