Zimbabwe Prepares for Repatriation of Citizens From South Africa

The Zimbabwean government is preparing for the return of up to 1.4 million citizens from South Africa following a surge in xenophobic attacks. Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe announced that authorities are working to establish reintegration protocols, with nearly 100,000 Zimbabweans already repatriated since May. This sudden influx presents a significant challenge to Zimbabwe's public infrastructure and social services. Local humanitarian groups report that the country requires expanded fiscal capacity to absorb this population movement, especially amid ongoing economic instability. The repatriation of these citizens reduces diaspora remittances while placing an unfunded demand on domestic infrastructure.
