Zimbabwean Exports to China Surge to $1.36 Billion on Tobacco Demand

Zimbabwean exports to China surged to US$1.36 billion in 2025, marking a massive increase from just US$256 million in 2021. According to data released by the national trade promotion agency Zimtrade, this rapid commercial expansion was driven almost entirely by Chinese demand for Zimbabwean tobacco and tobacco-related products. This trade milestone follows years of strategic bilateral negotiations and agricultural agreements aimed at opening up Asian markets to local Zimbabwean producers. Previously, local exporters struggled with strict regulatory barriers and limited logistics networks, which historically capped trade volumes with Beijing. However, this booming trade relationship exposes Zimbabwe to extreme economic vulnerability by tying its export revenues almost exclusively to a single agricultural commodity and a single geopolitical buyer.
