Chinese National Held for Lithium Smuggling
Chinese national Ning Yaokun, also known as Tony and co-director of Orequest Pvt Ltd, appeared in Harare court accused of masterminding an operation to smuggle 720 tonnes of unbeneficiated lithium ore, NewZimbabwe.com reported. Magistrate Marewanazvo Gofa remanded him in custody until Monday for bail consideration, pending further investigation. The arrest follows months of surveillance by the Zimbabwean mining enforcement unit, which uncovered the smuggling network. The case is a major instance of resource theft with significant economic and diplomatic implications for Zimbabwe's mining sector and could deter future investment. This case exposes the regime's struggle to control resource theft and its reliance on foreign investors, highlighting the vulnerability of Zimbabwe's mining sector to illegal exploitation.
