MCAZ Pushes Tighter Controls On Veterinary Medicines

Daily News reported that the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe has escalated its campaign against unregistered veterinary products, including prescription preparations. Speaking during the Veterinary Medicines Stakeholder Virtual meeting, MCAZ public relations officer Davison Kaiyo said the authority was engaging the Veterinary Services Department to tighten controls on prescription preparations in the country. The regulatory friction stems from the circulation of unregistered veterinary medicines that bypass formal approval and threaten animal and human health. MCAZ is pushing for stricter oversight while industry players face closer scrutiny and uncertain compliance timelines, with importers and veterinary practitioners told to prepare for tighter verification even though no enforcement date has been published. The core vulnerability is weak coordination among regulators and limited enforcement capacity, which allows illicit products to keep moving through decentralized markets and could blunt the crackdown without stronger inspection powers.
