State-Controlled Zimpapers Fires Veteran Journalists
The state-controlled Zimbabwe Newspapers (1980) Limited group, commonly known as Zimpapers, has terminated several veteran journalists, pulling senior voices out of the public print operation. Zimeye reported that the dismissals landed inside the newsroom and concentrated editorial control at a sensitive moment for state media, where experienced reporting capacity had already come under pressure. The move triggered immediate concerns about political interference and the shrinking space for independent journalism. Current and former staff described the exits as sudden and destabilising, while no detailed official rationale circulated publicly, leaving affected journalists and colleagues without clarity on the grounds for termination. The core vulnerability is a state media ecosystem that sheds institutional memory exactly when credibility and audience trust are weakest. This leaves public information more vulnerable to party narratives and narrows the space for independent reporting.
