US ends Zimbabwe health funding after MoU rejection

According to iHarare, the United States will terminate all health funding in Zimbabwe by September 30, 2026, after Harare rejected a proposed bilateral Health Memorandum of Understanding. Ambassador Pamela Tremont confirmed the exit, ending more than two decades of US-supported health initiatives that included HIV/AIDS, malaria, and maternal health programs, which had been a cornerstone of bilateral cooperation. The decision leaves a critical gap in these programs, threatening to reverse gains made in combating HIV/AIDS and malaria, with local health officials warning of immediate service disruptions and potential loss of life. The rejection of the MoU, which Zimbabwe deemed intrusive, signals a deepening rift between the two governments as Zimbabwe asserts its sovereignty over health policy. Zimbabwe now seeks alternative donors from China and other partners while facing a strained public health system already struggling with resource shortages and disease burden. The exit underscores the severe impact on health programs and the widening diplomatic divide between Washington and Harare, leaving millions vulnerable without immediate replacement.
