Wuhan hosts global mayors for urban innovation talks

According to iHarare, the Global Mayors Dialogue in Wuhan from September 18-21 brought together 80 international guests from 24 cities across 22 countries, including mayors from Asia, Africa, and Latin America, to discuss urban innovation and cooperation. The event highlighted Wuhan's post-pandemic recovery and its push for international city partnerships to boost economic development and trade ties. The dialogue focused on smart city solutions and sustainable development, with sessions on digital governance, green infrastructure, and public transport innovation. While promoting collaboration, the gathering also underscored China's soft power ambitions in urban governance, with critics noting the absence of major Western cities like New York or London. Wuhan showcased its own smart city projects, including AI traffic management and eco-districts, as models for other cities. The event reflects China's efforts to position itself as a leader in urban innovation despite geopolitical tensions, but no Zimbabwean city participated, limiting direct relevance.
