Zimbabwe Presses World Bank To Clear International Debt
Harare has opened a direct push to unlock external financing and ease a suffocating debt overhang. Daily News reported that Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube met World Bank managing director Anna Bjerde and senior officials in New York on Friday to press for support in clearing Zimbabwe's international debt. The friction lies between the bank's conditions and Harare's limited fiscal room. Ncube tied debt clearance to financing for social and economic development, but Zimbabwe's arrears to multilateral lenders have long blocked concessional funding and forced the Treasury into stop-start recovery measures. The core vulnerability is Harare's dependence on external validation without first resolving the governance and repayment questions that keep creditors cautious.
