Transportation Speed Monitoring

Zimbabwe rolls out speed monitors for public vehicles

According to Daily News, authorities launched a National Speed Monitoring System targeting public service vehicles, including buses and commuter omnibuses, with a six-month grace period for compliance. The system uses GPS and telematics to track speed and enforce limits, aiming to curb Zimbabwe's high road crash toll which has claimed over 1,500 lives annually in recent years. The rollout follows years of ineffective enforcement and rising accident fatalities, with the government hoping to reduce deaths by 50% through better monitoring. Operators face pressure to install monitoring devices, but the grace period delays immediate impact on road safety, raising concerns among safety advocates. The system's success depends on consistent enforcement, a weak link in Zimbabwe's traffic regulation history where corruption and lack of resources have hindered previous efforts. Without sustained political will and investment in enforcement, the speed monitoring system may become another underutilized tool in the fight against road accidents.
