Crime Rape Conviction

Zvishavane Man Gets 20 Years for Raping Daughter

A Zvishavane man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping his 16-year-old daughter, Southern Eye reported, after he arrived home drunk and threatened her with a knife. The court heard the assault occurred in February, with the father forcing the teenager into his bedroom under threat of violence. The case highlights the persistent crisis of domestic sexual violence in Zimbabwe, where many victims suffer in silence. Despite the stiff sentence, activists warn that underreporting and cultural stigma continue to shield perpetrators, leaving many child victims without justice. The conviction sends a strong message, but systemic barriers such as fear of family breakdown and lack of support services prevent many cases from reaching court. Child protection groups are calling for community-based reporting mechanisms and psychosocial support for survivors.
