NRZ and BBR partner to haul lithium to Maputo port
National Railways of Zimbabwe partnered with Beitbridge Bulawayo Railway to transport lithium concentrate from Gwanda to Maputo port in Mozambique. The collaboration provides a freight rail option for the battery mineral, expanding logistics capacity beyond road haulage. Africa's top lithium producer previously relied on trucking the bulk mineral to port, a more expensive method with logistical bottlenecks. The rail partnership offers a cost-effective alternative for lithium exporters. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to strengthen mineral export infrastructure. The rail option reduces transport costs and improves supply chain efficiency for lithium producers operating in the Gwanda region.
