Zimbabwe pays US$40m to BIPPA-protected farmers
Zimbabwe paid US$40 million to 93 farms protected under Bilateral Investment Protection and Promotion Agreements (BIPPAs) as part of a US$130.5 million compensation programme. The government pledged to settle the remaining US$70.5 million through future budget allocations. The payments form part of Zimbabwe's broader efforts under the Structured Dialogue Platform on Arrears Clearance and Debt Resolution. The programme targets former white farmers who lost land during the land reform programme. The core vulnerability: The outstanding US$70.5 million liability continues to strain Zimbabwe's fiscal position and complicates its re-engagement with international creditors.
