Mutapa Fund unveils NRZ revival plan after decades
The Mutapa Investment Fund (MIF) has unveiled a long-awaited turnaround strategy for the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ), aiming to end decades of stagnation and underinvestment that have crippled the country's rail network. According to New Zimbabwe, the plan was announced alongside the commissioning of three refurbished locomotives and 100 wagons, funded by a US$2.5 million investment intended to revive freight and passenger services. Critics argue the strategy lacks concrete timelines and fails to address NRZ's deep-seated infrastructure decay, governance failures, and chronic shortage of rolling stock, raising doubts about its effectiveness. The core vulnerability remains whether MIF can enforce accountability where previous state-led efforts have stalled, given the railway's history of mismanagement and political interference. The success of this revival hinges on MIF's ability to overcome institutional inertia and deliver measurable results that restore NRZ as a key logistics artery for Zimbabwe's economy.
