Tobacco sector sets minimum wage at US$493

The least paid employee in Zimbabwe's cigarette and tobacco manufacturing industry will now earn US$493 monthly, following endorsement of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) by the Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare. According to New Zimbabwe, the wage floor aims to improve living standards in a sector critical to exports and foreign exchange earnings, as tobacco is one of Zimbabwe's top agricultural exports. However, employers argue the increase strains operational costs amid currency volatility and declining global tobacco demand, warning that it could lead to job cuts or accelerated automation. The core vulnerability is that the wage hike may accelerate automation or informal hiring, undermining the intended benefits for workers and potentially reducing formal employment. The new minimum wage highlights the tension between improving worker welfare and maintaining competitiveness in a challenging economic environment, with implications for labour relations across the manufacturing sector.
